2D Colour Doppler Echocardiography (Echo)

An echocardiogram is a cardiac ultrasound. In cardiac care, an ultrasound helps assess the condition, structure, function and size of the heart chambers by using ultrasound waves. A cardiac ultrasound is a painless procedure, and when combined with cardiac Doppler it detects abnormalities of blood flow within the heart.

Special Instructions

There are no pretest dietary restrictions. The patient should continue to take any prescribed medications before and after the test.

Please do not wear body lotion or perfume on the day of your test. It is suggested to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your test to register at the reception desk. Bring your health card and your requisition form (if your physician has provided you with one).

During the test

Please allow approximately 30-40 minutes to complete your test. You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up and lay down on your left side.

Female patients

Female patients will be provided with a gown.

In order to obtain good quality images, it is necessary to apply some pressure with the probe. If the pressure creates discomfort, the patient should alert the sonographer.
