Contrast Echocardiography

Contrast Echocardiography is a specialized cardiac ultrasound test that uses a contrast agent (Definity) to enhance the visualization of heart structures and blood flow. It is particularly beneficial for patients with suboptimal images during a standard echocardiogram. This test provides your healthcare provider with a clearer assessment of your heart's function and structure.

Special Instructions

  • There are no dietary restrictions before the test.

  • Continue taking prescribed medications as usual unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

  • Do not wear body lotion, perfume, or oils on the day of your test.

  • Wear comfortable clothing that can be easily removed from the waist up.

During the Test

The procedure typically takes 45–60 minutes, depending on the condition being assessed. You will be asked to remove clothing from the waist up and lie on your left side.

  1. Preparation:

A small intravenous (IV) line will be inserted into a vein in your arm to administer the contrast agent (Definity).

  2. Imaging Process:

The sonographer will apply gel to your chest and use an ultrasound probe to capture images of your heart.

Some pressure may be applied to obtain high-quality images. If you feel discomfort, please notify the sonographer.

  3. Contrast Injection:

The contrast agent will be injected through the IV.

Female Patients

Female patients will be provided with a gown to ensure comfort and privacy during the test.

After the Test

  • Patients with specific pre-existing conditions may be monitored for up to 30 minutes after the test.

  • You can resume normal activities immediately following the test unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Test Results Interpretation and Follow-Up

  • The sonographer performing your test will not provide test results.

  • A cardiologist will interpret your echocardiogram, and a detailed report will be sent to your referring physician.

  • You can discuss your results and any necessary next steps with your physician.
