2D Colour Doppler Echocardiography (Transthoracic Echocardiogram)
An echocardiogram is a cardiac ultrasound. In cardiac care, an ultrasound helps assess the condition, structure, function and size of the heart chambers by using ultrasound waves. A cardiac ultrasound is a painless procedure, and when combined with cardiac Doppler it can detect abnormalities of blood flow within the heart.
Clinical Indications for Transthoracic Echocardiography
- Evaluation of suspected complications of Coronary Artery Disease(CAD) or Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Heart muscle and valve function assessment
- Evaluation of murmur in patient with suspicion of valvular or structural heart disease
- Assessment of known or suspected adult congenital heart disease
- Assessment of Arrhythmia
- Evaluation of prosthetic valve function
- Evaluation of suspected infective endocarditis
- Evaluation of cardiac mass (suspected tumor or thrombus)
- Evaluation of pericardial conditions: i.e. pericardial effusion, constrictive pericarditis
- Evaluation of shortness of breath for possible cardiac etiology
- Evaluation of aortic root and conditionslike Marfan’s syndrome
- Screeningfor hereditary cardiac abnormalities like suspected cardiomyopathy
